How do infrared heaters work?

Airrex diesel infrared heaters work by burning diesel fuel to heat a ceramic or metal surface, which then emits infrared radiation. This radiant heat warms people, surfaces, and objects directly, without heating the air, making it highly efficient, especially in drafty spaces like workshops, garages, and construction sites.

Are infrared heaters efficient?

Yes, Airrex infrared heaters are highly efficient. They transfer heat directly to people and surfaces without needing to warm the surrounding air. This minimizes heat loss and energy waste, making them ideal for open, drafty, or poorly insulated environments.

Running Costs of Diesel Infrared Heaters

The most cost-effective heating option in the long term depends on several factors: electricity, diesel, and gas prices, the initial cost of the device, possible installation expenses, maintenance requirements, the insulation level of the heated space, the type of usage (continuous or occasional), the size and type of the area being heated, whether it’s a small room or a larger open space. Local climate also affect some technologies (Split system heat pumps), they may lose efficiency in extremely cold conditions. Rex Nordic infrared diesel heaters are suitable for heating both small and large spaces. They are low-maintenance, use only minimal amount of electricity (max. 80W/h when heating), thermostat controlled, require no fixed installation and provide heat efficiently. Proper ventilation is essential, both for exhausting flue gases and for supplying fresh air needed for combustion. Unlike conventional heaters, Rex Nordic infrared models radiate heat directly to surrounding surfaces, objects and people, rather than simply warming the air. This makes them a good option also for drafty places where air heater would lose its efficiency.

Are AIRREX diesel heaters economical to run?

Yes, Airrex diesel heaters are very economical to run. They efficiently convert diesel fuel into radiant heat and only burn fuel when needed to maintain the set temperature, helping to minimize fuel consumption.

In addition, they use very little electricity (around 80W per hour during operation) for components like the fuel pump and control system, which keeps overall energy costs low.

Airrex Infrared Heaters and Exhaust Gas Safety

Airrex infrared heaters are designed to operate safely and efficiently indoors when normal ventilation is provided. Independent emission testing shows that Airrex heaters produce extremely low levels of carbon monoxide and other exhaust gases compared to many traditional diesel heating systems.

Are Airrex Heaters Safe Indoors?

Yes. Airrex infrared heaters are engineered for clean combustion, producing very low emissions during operation. In well-ventilated spaces such as workshops, warehouses, garages, and industrial buildings, Airrex heaters can be used safely without the need for a separate exhaust pipe.

Independent testing confirms that carbon monoxide emissions remain well below harmful workplace exposure limits during normal use.

Carbon Monoxide Emissions

According to workplace safety regulations, carbon monoxide exposure should not exceed 10 mg/m³ during an 8-hour working day.

At full operating capacity, the Airrex AH-300 produces approximately 1 mg/m³ of carbon monoxide, meaning exposure levels remain significantly below the recommended safety limit. Since heaters rarely operate continuously at maximum output, real-world exposure levels are typically even lower.

With normal ventilation, carbon monoxide does not present a health risk.

Carbon Dioxide Levels

Airrex heaters also produce low levels of carbon dioxide during combustion. Exhaust gases from the Airrex AH-300 contain approximately 10% carbon dioxide, which quickly disperses into the surrounding air.

When used in properly ventilated spaces, carbon dioxide levels remain within accepted indoor air quality recommendations.

Nitrogen Oxides and Ventilation

Like all diesel-powered heating systems, Airrex heaters produce small amounts of nitrogen oxides during combustion.

Emission testing of the Airrex AH-300 operating at full capacity recorded nitrogen oxide levels of:

183 mg/m³ using standard diesel
201 mg/m³ using biodiesel

In open or ventilated spaces, these emissions rapidly dilute and fall below harmful concentrations.

For smaller enclosed areas, normal ventilation is recommended during the initial heating phase when the heater is operating at maximum capacity.

Recommended Room Size and Ventilation

When operating continuously at full output, the Airrex AH-300 is suitable for spaces of approximately 200 m³ or larger — equivalent to a room measuring roughly 8 × 10 × 2.5 metres.

With standard ventilation providing one full air change every two hours, the heater can also be used safely in spaces smaller than 100 m³.

As the room reaches temperature, the heater automatically reduces power output, lowering emissions even further.

Do Airrex Heaters Need an Exhaust Pipe?

In most industrial and commercial applications, a separate exhaust pipe is not required. Airrex heaters are designed to achieve highly efficient combustion with extremely low carbon monoxide emissions.

However, in very small or poorly ventilated spaces, additional ventilation or external exhaust routing may be beneficial during the initial heating period.
